Nuclear weapons policies and climate change continue to pose existential threats to current and future generations. Furthermore, the current armed conflicts in Israel/Gaza and Russia/Ukraine are creating catastrophic humanitarian, economic, and environmental consequences and are increasing the threat of nuclear weapons use.

What policies internationally and at the country level can address jointly appearing issues of climate change and militarism? How can the interests of the global youth be included in policy decisions on these issues? Can the new UN Envoy on Future Generations make a difference? And what impact can the International Court of Justice have in its current cases on genocide, armed conflict and climate change, the latter case being led by youth? The Basel Intergenerational Forum will bring together policymakers, youth activists, and professionals to discuss these questions and international initiatives that might provide solutions for a sustainable future. It builds upon previous years’ events and the 2024 World Future Policy Awards on Peace and Future Generations.

Schon in den 1950-er Jahren stand die freie Welt vor derselben Bedrohung wie wir heute: der Möglichkeit einer Selbstvernichtung der Menschheit durch den Einsatz atomarer Waffen auf der einen- und einem jede Freiheit erstickenden Totalitarismus auf der anderen Seite. In seinem Buch Die Atombombe und die Zukunft des Menschen von 1958 hat der Philosoph Karl Jaspers aus umfassender philosophischer Sicht darzulegen versucht, wie dieser doppelten Bedrohung zu begegnen wäre. Wir fragen uns, ob seine Antwort auch heute – oder vielleicht erst recht heute – noch Gültigkeit hat.

Weil wir der Ansicht, sind, dass die Antwort auf die Bedrohung, vor der die Menschheit heute steht,  weder blosse Angelegenheit von Militärs, Diplomaten, Politikern und Fachwissenschaftlern sein kann, noch die von Fach-Philosophen bleiben darf, sondern jeden einzelnen von uns angeht, richtet sich diese Veranstaltung an ein allgemeines, selber um eine Antwort ringendes Publikum. Folgende Themen werden dabei im Mittelpunkt stehen:

1. Wir führen uns vor Augen, in welcher Situation wir heute stehen angesichts des nuklearen Vernichtungspotentials und der globalen militärischen und geo-politischen Realitäten.
2. Im Wissen darum, dass die atomare Gefahr nur gebannt werden kann, wenn sich ein Weltfriedenszustand errichten lässt, fragen wir, unter welchen Bedingungen ein solcher überhaupt möglich sein könnte.
3. Im Wissen darum, dass es am Ende von jedem Einzelnen abhängt, was aus der Welt wird, fragen wir, was der Einzelne überhaupt tun kann.
4. Da nichts weniger als eine Umkehr des Einzelnen und der Politik gefordert ist, fragen wir nach den Voraussetzungen und Bedingungen einer solche Umkehr und was uns Hoffnung geben kann.

Informationsveranstaltung für Basler Maturand:innen und Teilnehmer:innen des Basel Peace Forum 2025

Aus aktualpolitischen Gründen präsentiert das Basel Peace Office in Zusammenarbeit mit der Organisation IPPNW (International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War) eine Veranstaltung zum Thema "Atomwaffen - Geschichte, Risiken, nukleare Proliferation". Dabei wird der Kurzfilm "Nuclear Stories" zu relevanten historischen Ereignissen gezeigt, gefolgt von einem Vortrag. Vielen Jugendlichen sind bestimmte historische Ereignisse wie die Atomtests im Pazifik oder die Kubakrise nicht bekannt. Sie sind sich der Risiken und Auswirkungen eines Atomkrieges nicht bewusst.

Die Veranstaltung findet in deutscher Sprache statt und ist offen für alle Teilnehmer:innen des Basel Peace Forum 2025.

The Peace, nuclear Abolition and Climate Engaged Youth (PACEY) Award ceremony will place as an online event on January 22. Three prizes of €5000 each will be awarded at the event for youth-led projects that have the potential to make a significant difference on peace, nuclear disarmament and climate issues.

The event will include short presentations from the nine youth projects chosen by the jury to be the finalists. The audience will then vote to determine the three winners. In addition, the Award ceremony will include short presentations from a sample of the previous PACEY Award winners.

Die atomare Bedrohung und die Krise der Freiheit hat Karl Jaspers bereits in den 1950er Jahren analysiert. Doch wie aktuell sind seine Gedanken heute? Welche Antworten bietet Jaspers auf die Fragen nach Weltfrieden, individueller Verantwortung und der Möglichkeit einer Umkehr?

In dieser Podiumsdiskussion diskutieren zwei Philosophen und ein Friedens- und Konfliktforscher, wie Jaspers’ Ideen auf die heutigen Herausforderungen angewendet werden können. Das Publikum ist eingeladen, aktiv mitzudenken, Fragen zu stellen und gemeinsam mit den Experten nach Wegen aus der aktuellen Bedrohungslage zu suchen.

As early as the 1950s, Karl Jaspers analyzed the nuclear threat and the crisis of freedom. But how relevant are his thoughts today? What answers does Jaspers offer to the questions of world peace, individual responsibility and the possibility of turning back?

In this panel discussion, two philosophers and a peace and conflict researcher will discuss how Jaspers' ideas can be applied to today's challenges. The audience is invited to actively participate, ask questions and join the experts in looking for ways out of the current threat situation.
